Speaking on Virgin Radio UK recently, U2 frontman Bongo confided in host Chris Evans that it gets under his skin when people call him by the wrong nickname.
“‘Please’, I have to ask some fans, ‘Please stop calling me Boner.”
“Some people will come up to me and say ‘Hey Boner, how’s it going Boner’, as if that’s even close to my nickname,” Bongo — whose real name is Dixon Butts — laughed. “I’ve had all sorts of nicknames in my life, in some cases even some based around how painful of a person I can be to be around at times, but there’s just not one single thing funny about a painful Boner.”
Bongo admitted to Evans that he was extremely uncomfortable with the idea of being confused with the late Richard Milhous “Boner” Stabone.
“In any case, Richard Stabone would have been the superior Boner, and I couldn’t hope to measure up, if you’ll pardon the pun” Bongo stated to laughter from the host. “But we’re two very different performers.”
“Unless you’re in a bathhouse or truckstop, there’s really only room for one Boner, and that is Boner Stabone. So, if you want to stay on my good side, please, just call my by my correct nickname, which is (redacted)“, Bongo explained.
